St. Louis Youth Chastised for Entrepreneurial Mindsets

From KMOV.com…

St. Louis City Police say a group of young suspects between the ages of 10 and 15 robbed a woman feet away from Cherokee Street in south St. Louis, where people are regularly out walking around from shop to shop or enjoying a meal.

“Absolutely not, I am not surprised,” said Cheyenne Metts. “Stuff like that happens all the time.” Officers say the robbery happened around 6 Sunday evening near the intersection of California Avenue and Cherokee Street.

A 57-year-old woman was getting out of her car when she was approached by 5 boys between the ages of 10 and 15, demanding she hand over her purse… (continued)… Police say the purse was later found less than a block away from where the robbery happened on Nebraska Avenue, but the victim’s money and keys were no longer in it.

Folks I understand this is not a laughing matter. This story has a victim and I would never make a victim the brunt of a joke. However, can we please for a brief moment take into consideration the astonishing fact that these alleged ‘criminals’ are prepubescent?!

Before you judge me for not immediately condemning their immorality, why don’t you ask yourselves what YOU were doing when YOU were 10. These kids are fucking entrepreneurs. Most 10 year-olds just beg their parents for money; they are too immature and lazy to actually work for it. These kids are out there earning it themselves! Why are we chastising them for their entrepreneurial mindsets and their ambition to make money on their own? These kids should be every parents’ dream.

Not only are they highly determined to make money but they are also smart enough to grasp the most timely-efficient and profitable way to make money. They were able to quickly realize that no kid has ever made more than $5 sitting there all day with a fucking lemonade stand. A lemonade stand has overhead costs… most 10 year-olds don’t have start-up money lying around to go out and buy a table and cups and sugar and lemons and a sign and paint and whatever else lemonade stands need to earn an embarrassingly measly profit. Stealing a woman’s purse in broad daylight has virtually zero overhead or operating costs and can be done in less than a minute. Say she had $200 in her purse and they robbed her in 37 seconds. That is an hourly pay rate of over $19,000… TAX FREE. Folks that is more than what classmates Matthew Stafford and Justin Verlander make combined in a year, after taxes. We should not overlook these kids’ savvy business minds.

I also would not be surprised if they took their profits from this operation and invested it into something that can facilitate future business opportunities… like a gun for higher-grade thefts or drug inventory to sell for profit. This is how empires start.

Now let me finish by saying I DO NOT condone their behavior or the way they went about making money… but I think society is to blame for that. We need to catch these kids, not to punish them, but to convert their brilliant business instincts into legal ways of making money. Kind of like a Good Will Hunting situation. Put them to good use to better themselves and their families. These kids shouldn’t have to rob helpless citizens on the street to get their first instances of cash, we should be giving them seed money as capital investors.
